4 Health And Fitness Careers You Should Consider

6 November 2017 Written by: Saad Shafiq No Comment

Whether you’re starting out or switching careers, consider training to work in the health and fitness industry. Not only are our sedentary lifestyles leading us to spend more on structured exercise than ever before, but the rise of fitness culture in retail and the public eye means that more people are paying attention to what they put in their bodies and how they treat themselves. Read below for some of the options that you can pursue if you want to work in the field.

Most people have heard of myotherapy, but many are unsure what it actually involves. Myotherapists conduct an evidence based assessment of the human body in order to treat and rehabilitate pain that is associated with the musculoskeletal system. This may include corrective exercises and manual treatments such as dry needling, types of massage and electro or thermo therapeutic techniques. Myotherapy courses are offered via several providers in Australia and in order to become qualified you should undertake industry placement to obtain hands on experience.

Personal Trainer

A certificate 3, 4 or diploma of fitness will provide you a nationally recognised qualification to teach in a variety of fitness settings. Certificate 3 will generally allow you to commence work as a gym instructor while the certificate 4 means you can also offer services as a personal trainer. If you then wanted to establish a group fitness class in Port Melbourne, for example, you would eligible for the types of insurance that you’d need to take out if running your own business such as an outdoor boot camp. Many people use these courses as a pathway to tertiary studies in exercise science and work in settings with professional athletes or medical rehabilitation clinics.

Pilates Instructor

As a teacher of the Pilates method, you will develop a working understanding of biomechanics and human anatomy. The certificate 4 level will qualify you to teach mat work and in some instances reformer classes. For more experience in clinical reasoning, rehabilitation and teaching studio equipment classes, you should complete a diploma or advanced diploma. Each of these involve extensive supervised clinic hours in order to develop teaching style and gain experience in helping people manage injuries and pain issues, as well as getting fitter. Pilates can be offered as general exercise or prescribed in certain conditions including pregnancy.

There is much variation in the types of certificates that fall under this category, so do your research to find a reputable course. Once you have gained some experience and appropriate training, joining an industry body like the Nutrition Society of Australia will mean that you will be found amongst the best in your field. At the tertiary level, you can study dietetics and become qualified as a dietician meaning you can advise people of all ages and health conditions, and your patients can access Medicare rebates. Continued study and education is highly relevant in this field as food and lifestyles are constantly evolving, as are diet related medical issues and diseases.
