Top 5 Most Lucrative Photography Jobs

26 February 2013 Written by: Amanda Green No Comment

Photography is certainly an interesting artistic field. It has the best of both worlds – a little bit of technical knowledge, working with numbers and fractions and having the eye and the mindset of the bohemian artist. Nevertheless, just as with any other artistic venture, it takes time and a lot of effort to become noticed, and a lot of time and effort to make money out of it.

This can be a real downturn as the equipment is quite expensive, not to mention the fact that it’s a vicious circle – no money for upgrades, no decent photography and over again. Therefore, what can a decent photographer expect from the photography job market? Will a photography degree reel in more customers? It very well could because displaying high quality photos as well as proof of higher education could help your reputation, plus a degree could put you 1 step closer to being able to teach photography for a living.

1.) Travel Photographer

Working for National Geographic is certainly a dream job for many nature lovers and photographers. A travel photographer has the chance to go to the most interesting places on the planet and earn a lot of money in the process. Thinking about it, one can easily imagine that travel expenses would be easily covered, and the work itself is never cheap – after all, one might be sent to dangerous or harder-to-reach places. Payment should cover all these.

2.) Wedding Photographer

Weddings happen all year round – not to mention that more and more people are looking for interesting poses that will last decades and decades. The first pre-requisite of finding a lucrative job as a wedding photographer involves having a very special set of skills and an incredible portfolio. One might want to keep these two in mind before venturing in the wedding photography niche.

3.) Food Photographer

Another relatively popular, and quite lucrative photography job involves food photography. Apart from the fact that it’s absolutely fantastic, note that most people rely on all sorts of reviews before venturing to a new place. Therefore that place and their food needs to look good both in reality and in pictures. This means that food photographers (especially quality ones) are kept in the highest regard.

4.) Wildlife Photographer

Right out there with the travel photographer, there’s that special kind of photographer that enjoys a little bit of thrill-seeking and wants to be out there in the field with the entire fauna. One can easily imagine why this particular job pays so well, and why it is so important for photographers to choose carefully this path as it can easily become strenuous.

5.) Journalism Photographer

Reporting the news is one thing. Being the pesky guy with the camera that takes pictures of all the awful things that happen in the world, is a completely different story. The main issue is whether this job suits the fellow photographer or not. It’s an incredibly tough job – quite well paid, and incredibly sought.
